July 16, 2024 ºù«ÍÞapp” The National Apiculture Research Training and Development Institute (NARTDI) continues to champion beekeeping initiatives, with its latest effort assisting Ms. Gertrude A. Fontanilla in establishing her apiary in San Juan, La Union.

Ms. Fontanilla recently completed the basic beekeeping training held on July 3-5, 2024. Eager to put her new knowledge into practice, she immediately acquired two colonies of Apis mellifera, commonly known as the Western honeybee, and some other beekeeping supplies and materials to start her beekeeping venture.

Guided by the NARTDI Executive Director, Dr. Joseph A. Panas, the NARTDI team provided technical support to Ms. Fontanilla. The assistance involved site assessment, apiary establishment, colony transfer, re-hiving, and initial management practices to ensure the health and productivity of the bees. The NARTDI team’s expertise was pivotal in helping Ms. Fontanilla navigate the early stages of her beekeeping activity.

Ms. Fontanilla extended her gratitude for the assistance provided by NARTDI in establishing her apiary.

Director Panas emphasized the importance of supporting new beekeepers: “Our mission at NARTDI is to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed in beekeeping. We are thrilled to see Ms. Fontanilla’s enthusiasm and commitment, and we look forward to seeing her apiary thrive.” (By Arvin C Tuyan)
